You Deserve a Break!
Your boss may not like it and if you're the boss… then you may not like that your team needs a break.
One thing is for sure, there is a public holiday and, unless you and your team are surgeons on call to save people’s lives then you and your team deserve a break. Even surgeons take days off to disconnect.
I am aware that his may not sit very well with some people but the fact of the matter is, if you own the company and you want to work 24/7 then, I honestly respect that. More power to you, but don’t expect the same level of commitment from your employees.
Not because they don’t value the work, rather, it’s just not their business and they won’t want to work as much as you.
Recently Microsoft Japan concluded that employees productivity increased 40% after the introduction of a 4 day work week.
Having more time off allowed them to disconnect, and become more productive during the week.
When you know there’s only 4 days to work, then automatically you become more focused and welcome less distractions.
Furthermore, this forced the company to slash meetings by 50%. They realized that meeting culture of cramming half the workforce and locking them in a room or on a call for over 60 minutes was just a waste of time, productivity and resources.
A company in New Zealand reported an increase of 20% in productivity and 45% in work-life balance.
Off course that’s all presuming that the people at the top understand leadership and value work-life balance and productivity Vs putting in countless busy hours.
If not, then you will probably join the post pandemic mass resignation movement… and Here’s Good News team will be right here to help guide you through your next steps.
The principle of time off to disconnect is not new. In 1926 Henry Ford decided that if his employees had more time off, it would translate into more leisure and therefor more car purchases. Sales in fact increased and most American manufacturers adopted the same principle and by the 1960’s the 2 free days Henry Ford gave his employees became a standard across organization in the US and Europe.
It’s such a wonder that with all our technological development today we have become so much more connected and so little concerned with peoples well being.
When productivity suffers, it has become a habit to scold and disregard rather than support and help grow.
It’s a public holiday and you deserve a break. If your boss doesn't see that, then you need a new environment with leadership that values people.
